Fender Installation

In recent years bulk carrying vessels such as oil tankers and ore carriers have become larger and larger with cost constraints making their construction even lighter and thus less resistant to the reaction forces involved in berthing. Equally the dock facilities they are berthing onto were probably not designed for these large vessels or of the newer minimalist design.

These situations require a fender that will absorb high energy levels with minimum reaction and hull pressure. Compared to conventional fenders the pneumatic and foam fenders, manufactured by The Floating Fender Company, were developed to meet these criteria with quality and cost effectiveness.

Using our fenders can assist in simplifying the design and lowering construction costs of materials and build time. On a continuous quay the fenders will be installed at intervals determined by the size, length, bow radius and berthing conditions of the vessels using the quay.

Whether being used on a continuos quay or on a dolphin it is important to allow the fender to retain it's free shape at all water levels. If the fender is tightly restrained this can affect the performance of the fender.

Installation methods vary with the design of the quay or if the quay is of a new build or one existing. For our assistance with the correct selection of attachments please contact our technical office

It is important to remember that 'floating fenders' work best when they are floating and therefore the design of the installation must allow free movement of the fender to follow water level changes. Within the chain or wire moorings a swivel should be included to permit the fender to rotate freely about it's axis. Protection should be given to exposed chain or wire moorings to protect them and minimize on maintenance or risk of the fender breaking loose from it's position.
